In all things great and beautiful are the words we weave together to create an extraordinary canvas of peace and harmony found deep within the human element.
As writers, we are artists who crave to create. When bogged down with the daily grind of life, and the business side of writing, we tend to lose focus on what matters most – the inner workings of our heart. With that said I felt the frustrations that came with “chasing” the dream and decided to take a reprieve to regroup and focus on my own imagination. I discovered that I needed to step back from the chase and start thinking more strategically and give myself more time to dive into my need to create.
I found a cozy little cabin in the middle of the woods by a soothing lake where my only neighbors appear to be a family of hunters during the open fowl season. The sounds that interrupted my thoughts during the day were that of a distant rumbling of traffic barreling down the highway somewhere nearby and birds calling out to their flock. I was woken by a glorious sunrise bouncing off the lake, and I also witnessed a fawn galloping across the lawn in front of my cabin.
It’s peaceful here, and this retreat is exactly what my soul needed.
In the last month, I held two book signing events and met some incredible people. This month, I have another book signing event in Milford, Michigan. This event has proven to be a lot of work since I decided to feature all attending authors on my social media prior to the event. The idea of Author Spotlight came to me when I began to meet some amazing indie authors and wanted to share their works with my readers. Self-published authors need as much help as they can get since they do not have a team or money behind them to push all things marketing like traditionally published authors. We are a community that must uplift and encourage each other as we navigate through the industry of the written word.
To add fuel to the fire, I entered Grandfather’s Whispers in a Book Cover Contest for the Holiday Book Festival on November 30th. This contest requires daily voting and daily reminders from me to my readers to get out there and place their votes. So far, the votes are coming in, and my book has made it to the Final Four round and is gaining momentum. Thank you so much for your continuous love and support. However, this is now a close race. Please remember to keep voting every day so your favorite book cover remains at the top!
One of the events last month took place on the only day of the week that I have set aside for creative writing. Because of this, frustrations ran high and bled into my works the following Sunday. I didn’t accomplish much for creative thought and my word count was low. My lesson learned here is that I need to hold sacred my creative writing days and schedule book events on other days of the week.
Looking ahead, I have been working with my local library to bring to you a Creative Writing 101 course in the upcoming New Year. If you always wanted to write a book but never got around to it, here’s your chance to get started. Not only will we be discussing the creative writing process and working on writing exercises, but I will also be sharing my journey to publish Grandfather’s Whispers and signing my book after the class. Check the events section of my website often for the latest updates and registration link.
